The MCU has never spoken about the transition of Ed Norton to Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner until now.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe was still in its infancy when The Incredible Hulk debuted in the series in 2008, and no one knew what the future held for it. The third MCU film has always seemed a little disjointed, partly because Mark Ruffalo took over the role of Bruce Banner from Edward Norton starting with his next appearance in 2012’s The Avengers. As a result, the only thing that seemed to tie the films together for many years was Thaddeus Ross,
played by William Hurt. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has now, ten years later,
officially acknowledged the change in actor via a wry remark made by Mark Ruffalo’s Banner in the new She-Hulk series.
Whether within the plot of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law or through the fourth-wall-
breaking scenes in which Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters addresses
the audience directly, the comic elements are well utilized.
However, Mark Ruffalo is the one who made a passing comment with a deeper
meaning regarding the long overdue recognition of the actor switch that occurred between his first and second MCU appearances.
Banner remarks about Emil Blonsky, aka the Abomination, who, following a surprising return in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,
is now back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in She-Hulk and is portrayed by original actor Tim Roth.
When Walters’ attorney is requested to represent Blonsky at his parole hearing as
part of the plot involving Roth’s character’s reappearance,
she first objects because of what happened in The Incredible Hulk when the Abomination and Hulk sparred. But Ruffalo’s Banner assures her that everything is
OK and that their disagreement has been resolved, adding sarcastically, “That
argument was so many years ago, I’m a completely different guy now – literally.” Walters’ directed laughter and stare at the audience emphasize the situation.
Fans Hoped To See Edward Norton Reprise His Hulk Role In The Multiverse
“Five years from now it could totally morph into anything, whatever’s pertinent at the time. I almost see him going back to ‘Berserker Hulk’ or ‘World War Hulk’. It could go anywhere. That’s the exciting part — I’ve played five different versions from beginning to now, and that’s kept it interesting for me and I hope interesting for other people.”
